Puppy Tip - #1 You must Socialize
Socialization is key for all puppies to be healthy and happy for a lifetime. While the puppy is young get them out in the world and experiencing all aspects of life. If you are going out to run errands, take your new pup with you because everyone wants to see hold and pet a cute new pup. Go to the park let kids and adults see and play with your puppy by your structured rules and expectations. Let your pup experience life, so they become confident and enjoy different social settings. This will help when working on obedience in different settings later in pups adolescents.

House Breaking
Use a kennel that isn't much bigger than your puppy when house training your puppy. You use a smaller kennel because this will discourage your pup from using the opposite end of the kennel as a toilet. When taking a pup out to the bathroom, attach a word that you want to use as a command for using the bathroom for the lifetime of your dog - we use "hurry-up". To make this a command carry your pup out to the spot you want your pup to use for the restroom in your yard. Put the pup on the ground and when they squat, spin, sniff, and start to use the restroom, both 1 and 2, say your command word or phrase. Then celebrate with the pup by praising them and petting them for a job well-done. FYI - a puppy will usually have a bowel movement within 5 minutes of eating the first 6 months of life. If puppy doesn't go to the bathroom after taking them outside, pick it up and take it directly back to the kennel. Try again thirty minutes later; otherwise, you will be cleaning up the carpet in the house. Kennel Training Do not let the pup out of the kennel because it is being vocal or you will have just given it positive reinforcement for a negative behavior. Sleep with pup in the same room while it is in the kennel the first few nights, so if they start to stir you can take them out immediately to use the bathroom. |
